Hike and Planting Project with ONDA* from the Rim to the Deschutes River
Dates: March 22nd (Mon.), day hike and service project
Come celebrate the birthday of Earth Day founder John McConnell by helping heal the scars left by old roads in the uplands of the Middle Deschutes with the *Oregon Natural Desert Association.  We will be helping improve the uplands, by planting and seeding the Scout Camp area with native vegetation to jump-start rehabilitation of the area.  We also will be able to fit in a hike on the spectacular new loop trail down over the edge to the river. See the ONDA website for photos in this area and register for the trip or check this Calendar Item for more information.
Restoration Project Orientation and Training for Leaders and Interested Volunteers
April 3rd, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, Bend Senior Center, open to all interested members or volunteers
Come one, come all, we need interested stewards to join us for an orientation for our restoration projects on the Crooked and Deschutes Rivers.  If you are a seasoned veteran in the conservation game and want to find out what specific projects we are working on as group so you can help us plan and prepare for our work out in the region, please come to this meeting.  If you are passionate about the conservation of our coldwater fisheries and the habitats they support but don't have a lot of understanding of , and you want to find out where you can come out to help us perform some work - this meeting is for you!  If you want to get in to the field of conservation, restoration, protection and advocacy of riparian and fisheries habitats, this is a meeting where you can start building your work history by actively participating as a volunteer and help us lead teams of volunteers out into the field, along with working side by side with professionals in these fields from ODFW, BLM, and the Forest Service.  This orientation will prepare us for current projects and areas of concern, allowing us to prioritize opportunities to improve our stream conditions.  At the end of the orientation, the group will walk away with a calendar of opportunities this year and a list of sites we want to restore.  To help us plan out materials, coffee and bagels provided for the orientation, please rsvp to Darek Staab (dstaab@tu.org).
Field Trip to Pelton Round Butte fish passage facilities to see the out-migrating fish
Dates: April 10th, which is timed with Sockeye and Chinook out migration
Come join us for an educational tour of the Pelton Round Butte dams and fish passage.  As fish will be in the out migration, we should see a diversity of action.  We will meet in Bend or Redmond and carpool down stream together.  We will meet with a PGE biologist to see results of the spring migration.  Space is limited, RSVP to Darek (dstaab@tu.org) for a space and details.
Crooked River Clean Up in support of Crook County
Date and Times: April 17th, 9:00 am to 1:00pm, Prineville
The Saturday before Earth Day is a great opportunity to chip in and clean up one of our gems of the region – the Crooked River.  We will be supporting Crook County’s effort to rally volunteers and gather together with other partners and our community.  Meet at the swimming pool parking lot at 9am and we will identify our location and get out to the river.  BBQ and music for volunteers (Pioneer Park) starting at 11am.  Bring your own gloves, but garbage bags provided.  Find out more on this effort by clicking here or contact Ted Brownrigg.

Upper Deschutes River Riparian Planting Project with the Upper Deschutes River Coalition
Dates: Planting time will be in mid to late April and October for a few hardy volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help with a trail along the Upper Deschutes River and planting projects in the floodplain with the UDRC.  The coalition is a group of landowners who care about the Deschutes River and they need our support.  If you are interested in helping with this project in the Sun River area, please contact Darek Staab (dstaab@tu.org) for details and your availability.

Richard Louv Presentation, Resource Fair, and Students present at the Watershed Summit
Dates: May 12th and 13th, see Deschutes TU calendar for full description and links to full information
Join two days of festivities in honor of getting youth interested in nature.  We highly recommend getting tickets for these two days for environmental education.  Richard Louv wrote the book “Last Child in the Woods”, and he will present on May 12th, capped off by students sharing their own presentations at the Watershed Summit on May 13th.  See Deschutes TU calendar for info.

Stream Stewardship Day with UDWC where TU will host a stream stewardship project
Date and Time: June 5th, we will be gathering at McKay Park in Bend at 10:00am
Join us as we host a site for the Stream Stewardship Day for the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council.  For full information, please see the Deschutes TU calendar or UDWC website.

Campout and Day Hikes in the wild and scenic North Fork of the Crooked River
Dates: June 11th-13th (Friday through Sunday) with day hikes and fishing
Come join us for an educational adventure in the Deep Creek and North Fork watersheds of the Crooked River.  Our goal is to see new places -- we will see sites and restoration work in process on Ochoco National Forest lands to benefit a stronghold for the redband trout.  Sunday will be a day hike down the wild and scenic North Fork and discuss the importance of wild habitat and fish.  We will camp Friday and Saturday nights and have late afternoons free for exploring.  If you are interested in attending this activity, please contact Darek Staab or Mike Tripp to get more information.

Comments due on the Deschutes County Comprehensive Plan
Final Date TBA
The Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners will need input this spring.  See the Deschutes TU Website for key meetings, documents, links, and news.

Mentor students and youth during a watershed education program
Dates: March, April and May dates scheduled by TU and Wolftree
Volunteer mentors and educators are needed to help guide our youth through watershed discovery.  Outdoor education needs small student groups, which is only possible with interested mentors like you.  We are trying to recruit interest educators to support Wolftree programs and their field trips this spring.  In addition, TU is working with the Forest Service to host a restoration weekend with the Girl Scouts on May 22 and 23.  Email Blake Lowery for Wolftree days (blake@beoutside.org) or Darek to support a youth education weekend (dstaab@tu.org).

Volunteers needed Crooked River Fish Sampling with ODFW
Dates: June 21st – 25th expected to be the sampling dates and camping trip
ODFW is conducting the annual population assessments on the Crooked River June 21st through June 25th.  As usual, they are looking for volunteers to assist with fish redistribution and processing.  It is a great way to learn the Crooked and we could use your help, let Mike Harrington or Darek Staab  know if you are available.
