A new Watershed Initiative has emerged on the Upper Deschutes River
The Upper Deschutes Basin contains large river systems and long healthy tributaries to form 150 miles of headwaters and feeders to pour down the lower 100 miles through a large and scenic canyon. The goal of the Upper Deschutes Home Rivers Initiative is to protect this dramatic and unique basin and restore strong populations of redband trout, steelhead, bull trout, sockeye and chinook salmon and other native and wild species within the upper Deschutes watershed. With our local members and neighbors, we hope to sustain those populations through watershed restoration, education, and stewardship with our surrounding communities. TU believes that people must have a powerful connection to the critical landscapes that support the Northwest’s ecosystems, and will make community engagement an emphasis of this Home Rivers Initiative.

In my efforts to understand the notion of having over 400 members in our Chapter of Trout Unlimited, I thought it might be time to figure out what the history of our group has been, and how far back it goes. To date I haven't found more information online than I have discovered from talking to people in the community, but suffice it to say that there is a storied and controversial past.
From members and community members who have been here their entire lives, to recent developments of support from our National Trout Unlimited Staff, and reference points in newspapers and media for nearly 40 years - The Deschutes Chapter of Trout Unlimited is here to stay and seeks to expand on the fine traditions it has supported for this entire time.

For those of you who like to discover some new access points in the Deschutes Basin, our last General Membership meeting had Tom Mottl from BLM exposing a couple of really good spots. I have fished the Scout Camp Trail section of the Middle Deschutes, and it is a wonderful area to fish.
For those of you who want to get some new maps, just check out the links below and get yourself some driving directions! Here are the PDF files for the maps that BLM has supplied for OTTER BENCH TRAIL and SCOUT CAMP TRAIL.
