Ted Brownrigg - Chapter PresidentThe Crooked River is an important fishery in the Deschutes basin and ranks high in the Deschutes Chapter of Trout Unlimited strategic plan for protection and restoration.  Current events have moved this important waterway to the forefront.

Many of you may have heard about a recent announcement from US Rep. Greg Walden that he is going to introduce legislation concerning Bowman Dam and the Crooked River.  Nearly all of the conservation groups and angling clubs have been tracking this issue closely, meeting with representatives from Walden's office, staff representing Senators Wyden and Merkley who are also planning to introduce bills, the City of Prineville, and officials from local irrigation districts.

This is an extremely important issue for the current fish in the system and the efforts to successfully reintroduce steelhead and salmon in the upper Deschutes basin.

When you go to the John Day River in June you expect to catch fish, a lot of fish.  Normally you get tired of jerking smallmouth bass out of the river.  This year’s was different.  Our group of nine headed to the John Day River to float for a few days from Twickenham Bridge down to Clarno.

The river was higher than normal and the water was cold.  Not a good combination for smallmouth.  We managed to entice a few fish to go for the fly.  Some used large poppers, some with wooly buggers and a few with clousers.  Most of the luck came from fish deeper and slower strips.  Managed to land a few small fish and one large one of 3+ pounds.

Join the Deschutes TU Chapter on April 17 on the wild and scenic section of the Crooked River near Prineville for our 2nd Annual Crooked River clean-up day.  In conjunction with 2010 Crook County SOLV IT Cleanup Day we will spend a few hours on the river to help make it an enjoyable place to visit and fish.

After the cleanup the Crook County Parks and Recreation District have organized a BBQ and entertainment at the Prineville Pioneer Park.  So, mark your calendars, notify your friends and plan on bringing the kids to a fun day of good solid work.  This is a great way to give back and have a bit of fun.  More details to follow.

I have been an avid outdoors person for all of my life and have really enjoyed my time in the Central Oregon area.  So much so, my wife and I moved to Bend two years ago.  Like many people who enjoy the outdoors, I was aware of conservation efforts in many of the areas in which I enjoyed.  On occasion I would show up for a clean-up day, join a planting team for a day, or write a letter in support of some cause I believed in.  I should have paid more attention to the rivers, parks, hiking trails, and wilderness areas we all enjoy.  These areas would not exist in the condition they are today (they would be much worse) without the efforts of many dedicated individuals who spend the time making sure our outdoor resources can be enjoyed by many, and preserved for future generations.
