**Strategic plan for deschutes chapter #552

of trout Unlimited 2010-2015**

  • Protect: We will protect the critical habitat of native and wild fish of the Deschutes River Basin with the following geographic priorities: 1. Deschutes Reintroduction Areas (DRA). This is mainly those areas of the Deschutes River Drainage affected by the reintroduction of endangered and anadromous fish, 2. Crooked River Area (CRA) which are the areas not already covered in the DRA and located in the Lower, Upper and South Fork of the Crooked River Watersheds, 3. Middle and Upper Deschutes River (MUDR) and 4. Lower Deschutes River (LDR)
  • Reconnect: Our objective is to reconnect areas of the Deschutes Basin that have historically been fragmented and disjoined from their natural passages with the following priorities: 1. Barrier Removal, 2. Flow Management to mimic natural and historic patterns, AND 3. Advocacy for water and fish in the basin. To achieve these priorities, we will develop partnerships for conservation and promote wise groundwater and surface water use in those areas we are protecting.

  • Restore: Continue to support and develop key restoration strategies in the Deschutes and Crooked River basins by: 1. Tackling Restoration Projects in need, 2. Develop a Restoration and Monitoring Team to implement and monitor field projects, 3. Support Private Landowner projects and stewardship, and 4. Foster a creative outreach program to encourage partnerships with local businesses, groups, and agencies in the area for restoration efforts located in the Deschutes Basin.

  • Sustain: Through the education of our youth and our members we intend to sustain the coldwater fisheries for future generations in our basin by: 1. Supporting programs in Natural Resources Education, 2. Create Service Learning opportunities and Support Strategies for individual and business Members, 3. Support and Develop Community Outreach Events and Materials, as well as 4. Model Good Management Practices for the Deschutes Basin.

This plan encompasses a time frame from 2010 to 2015, and was designed with the vision that by the next generation, we can ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive in our Central Oregon range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters.

"Conserve the rivers of Central Oregon and the fish will thrive."
