Darek Staab is the Project Manager for TU’s Upper Deschutes Home Rivers Initiative.  He has been running the new initiative since May 2009, with restoration and education projects throughout Central Oregon.  To provide new service learning opportunities for adults in Central Oregon, he worked with the Deschutes Chapter to start the Deschutes Restoration Outreach Program in March 2010.  Currently working with 8 partners from the basin, the DROP program links outdoor learning opportunities with on the ground field needs for restoration.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Darek has been living and working in the Pacific Northwest for the past 10 years.  With a background in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Utah State University, Darek has been studying fish and rivers for the past 19 years throughout the West and into Alaska.  During that time, he has consistently held positions in scientific research or education, building up a strong background and management skills for running programs.  Darek completed a Masters of Education in Environmental Education through Western Washington University in 2004.

Before leaving Utah for the big trees and storms of the Northwest, Darek started his own field institute through Utah State University -- the Bear River Institute.  During his extensive work on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, he has directed the development of new curriculum and programs, field science studies, and a large science education project funded by the National Science Foundation.  To immerse himself in this region’s natural and cultural history, he has worked as a watershed scientist, naturalist, graduate student, educator and project manager throughout Western Washington.

During his recent position with Olympic Park Institute, he has focused his work on the Elwha River dam removal and restoration effort, directing programs and providing experiential education and citizen science opportunities for all ages (Elementary, Middle, High School, University, Teacher Trainings, and Adult Seminars).  Currently during his work on the Upper Deschutes, Darek is working with a diversity of partners and communities members to restore and conserve the rich heritage found in the region.
